Big Weekend

Well, Michael had a big weekend. As did his parents.

Thomas changed his first big dirty diaper. He didn't share the same enthusiasm Meg did, but he can build it up over the many more to come.

Michael was put back on CPAC at night and one hour during the day. Dr. Meg Irwin knew that he was not peeing the same amount and felt he was having difficulty with his breathing and thought he may have fluid in his lungs. Dr. Mom asked for an x-ray and lung check. Sure enough, and unfortunately, she was right and his lungs had built up fluid. The doctors have put Michael on lasix and he's had a much easier time breathing. We are hoping he will be able to come home on Friday!

On Sunday, Michael was given a little oxygen for an hour and then the team decided he did not need it. The extra dose of Lasix has already made a difference and the doctors are pleased with the direction he is heading.

Meg and Tommy are in awe of how wonderful their son is. After everything he has been through he never complains, is never fussy and he's now off the morphine for three days loving being awake and alert absorbing every moment. He smiles, coos and stares at his parents. He is the greatest gift to them.

Michael took all of his feeding and finished them like a champ and in record time. Now that he is off the morphine he has enjoyed his feedings and done tremendous. He is still on continuous feeds at night to give him a brake but what a difference a few days make with his bottle feeds.

Michael just needs to gain a little more weight. He has gone up and down but must start gaining weight consistently before going home. With all of his improved chowing, we think he'll be making it home soon!

Michal loves his Mom and Dad time. After they feed him, he usually falls right asleep. Now that he's having so much fun with them, he stays wide awake, smiling as they play and sing to him. It is amazing he can stay awake and alert for so long.

Sunday night, they lulled him to sleep and then put him in his crib. When Meg called to check in, the nurse said he woke up looking for his parents. She suggested that they are spoiling him by holding him so much. Michael's mom made it clear that he's going to get all the affection they can give. She knows it might not be the best habit but he has had too many days of his life that he could not be held... and it is make-up time! He is too precious and wonderful, not to be held. Michael is certainly feeling the love.

Hello Irwin Family,
I was without the computer over the weekend, and was glad for the news that Michael might be going home soon. He is getting cuter by the day.
You hold Michael and love him all you want. I think he loves. So what if it spoils him.

Megan,
You are absolutely right, you can never hold a baby too much!
Mothers always know best. You trusted your mother's instinct and you were right. Great job, Dr Meg :)
