I'll have surgery on Monday."
Today we got news that they are going to hold off on surgery until Monday. This extra pre-surgery time is only possible because of Michael's little miracle vein. It turns out that his heart grew an additional vein that has compensated for a valve that was starting to close. Without this vein, Michael would have been whisked off immediately and they would have needed to perform the Norwood (the first surgery for HLHS) within the first 20 minutes of him being born.
Tommy got Michael to suck on a pacifier (a great feat). He's cooing and stretching and already flexing his muscles. (Michael, not Thomas.)
So today we relish in our fortune of having some extra time to be with little Michael before his surgery. His parents credit Michael's guardian angels, including his great-Grammie & Grandpa, Nana & Papa, Nannie & Gangie, & and Uncle Mick for this special new addition.
Here are some shots of us enjoying the little Miracle Baby.

Hi everyone, this is Michael's grandad from the Irwin side. It was great to be with Meg and Thomas as this star was born. I feel very proud of all of them. I had to leave them late on Thursday and am now travelling to the UK, sitting in Philadelphia airport and checking on the blog. I cannot wait to get back to New York to see all of them together in the apartment.
I will be thinking of Michael all this weekend and on Monday, in spite of going to Wembly for the FA Cup Final. I am not sure who is the lucky one at this time, Meg for having Michael, Thomas for having Meg and Michael, Meg for having Thomas or Michael for having wonderful parents and family.
Michael is a great little guy and certainly is living up to the name of his great, great Uncle Mick
Tom Irwin
Hello again.
Thomas asked me to post the words to a song which Uncle Mick loved, the Liverpool Anthem as it is know in the UK. This song is played at every Liverpool football game and is played at every family occassion in Liverpool. Uncle Mick came from Liverpool and Monica's mum came from Liverpool, also know as the other capital of Ireland. When yoju read the words you will know the significance.
You’ll Never Walk Alone
Written by Rogers and Hammerstein for the 1945 Broadway musical 'Carousel', Gerry Marsden and his Pacemakers performed the song in Liverpool clubs during the birth of Merseybeat. "The audience would just stop, stand and listen. It had this immediate effect," says Marsden. Released in October 1963, YNWA was the Pacemakers' third consecutive number one and nowhere was it more popular than on the Kop, as fans sang along with the PA before matches. When it fell from the top spot, Kopites continued to sing it and YNWA has been played and sung at Anfield ever since.
When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
Is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Tho' your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone

TOMMY: Bo can NOT believe you cut the umbilical cord! He's going to need some pointers when it's his turn and he's so impressed with you!
MEG: Remember our little chat during lunch time at the boat house last summer?? I can't believe the day has actually arrived! I think it's actually starting to hit me that you're a MOMMY! I can't wait to see you and hug you!
BABY MICHAEL: Don't you worry about a thing, little one! My dad went to the shrine! He hasn't met you yet but know that you sure do have some SERIOUS special prayers going on and you're in GOOD HANDS! I think my dad tried to light ALL the candles in that place! I can't wait to meet you and tell you how cute that little button nose is. Be super strong on Monday and can't wait to see you at our future play dates with your Yarahmadi cousins (hehe!)!!! Lot's of love!
Congratulations, Megan & Thomas! He is a beautiful little man, what a gift! I am just finishing my OB-GYN rotation in med school and was blessed to be a part of bringing little babies into the world. Although he may have been born needing surgery, he comes from a family that have strong hearts and kind souls. He will surely be a strong little fighter, and baby Michael will be in our thoughts and prayers throughout the surgery and recovery process.
Lots of love and support from the Chicago representative of the Kidder family! :)
